Contemporary
POMO

In 1998, a consortium of Pilipino American contemporary artists united to join the international events commemorating the centennial anniversary of the end of Spanish rule in the Philippines. Consortium members were Wilma Consul, Allan Manalo, Joyce Manalo, Alleluia Panis, Sony Ley and Pearl Ubungen. The Post Modern American Pilipino Performance Project (POMO) was created to focus, highlight, promote, and elevate American Pilipino post-modern aesthetics. Kularts took the lead in producing the event. Yerba Buena Center for the Arts became a presenting partner and provided generous rental subsidies. POMO's success reflects the widespread interest in Pilipino American contemporary art and the need for a large-scale, annual event dedicated to the Pilipino American post-modern aesthetic. Today, POMO is held annually at the Zeum Theater in the SOMA district of San Francisco. POMO has presented an array of dynamic performers, including: Tongue In A Mood, TnT (Teatro ng Tanan), Touchblue, Sean San Jose, Gigi Otalvaro-Hormillosa, 8th wonder, STEAMROLLER, Simeon Den, Rex Navarrete, among many others.

PAGE-TO-STAGE Program

Kularts Page-to-Stage program challenges Pilipino American artists to create their own stories.

The difficult process of creation often takes years to develop. This program offers a place for emerging Pilipino American artists to be mentored and nurtured by master artists during the exploration and creation of new works, with incremental live presentations to further develop the work. This program addresses young Pilipinos coming to terms with the impact of colonialism and the search to create a "pre-Colonial" contemporary identity.

Kularts facilitates a process of mentorship and guidance from elder artists to younger artists through workshops and classes in literary and performance techniques. In 2003 Kularts began the Performing Arts Training Program creating the compelling 'Rediscovering Singkil' by a group of artists under 25 years old. Building on this experience, Kularts, with funding from The California Story Fund and the National Endowment for the Arts, embarked in 2005, on a one-of-a-kind four month journey exploring the truths about growing up a Pilipino male in California in an interactive and collaborative setting. A dynamic intergenerational and interdisciplinary project led by Jaime Jacinto, SONS, bridged established elder writers, poets, artists with young emerging Pilipinos under 40 years of age. Through a multimodal presentation blending poetry, spoken word, video, dance and music, these stories shed light on immigration experience in the unique California environment where Pilipinos make up the largest Asian American population. In 2007, Kularts gathered ten Pinay artists to engage in an artistic training program for four months led by a team of master artists: Ching Valdez (Theatre), Amara Tabor-Smith (Dance Theatre), Joel Tan (Poetry), Gennie Lim (Performance), Marianne Villanueva (Literature), and Sean San Jose (Theatre).
