DENI-AI IS SULTAN SURAB’S SECOND WIFE. SHE’S THE HEALER AND SEER OF THE CLAN. SHE ISN’T WELL LIKED BY SURAB’S FIRST WIFE, AND THE MOTHER OF KISIG. RIGHT BEFORE HER FAMILY TAKES OFF ON THE BALANGAY SHIP SHE HAS STRONG INTERNAL FEELINGS THAT POINT TO SOMETHING AWFUL HAPPENING.

THIS IS HER STORY…

As we prepare for this journey, I am filled with mixed emotions. Against my strong counsel, Surab insists that we travel as the royal family. We know there has been some trouble on Puló where Masikampo Pang-lima is exiled. It has been rumored that in his anger, Pang-lima has been cruel, using his powers to subjugate the people. I have heard that Pang-lima has strengthened his magical anting-anting.

I was trained to be a healer and seer of the clan and even though I made offerings to the spirits to request guidance and to show me what obstacles might come during this voyage, I could not see anything but the sea. It’s as though the vision has been veiled and I am left with this gnawing feeling that something awful will happen. I’m afraid my anxiety has something to do with our sailing route being too close to Puló.  We might be sailing into a battle that we are not prepared to withstand.

But Surab is firm in his thinking that it is time for Kisig to learn about his responsibilities to the Sultanate. We are embarking at dawn. Kisig’s mother has yet to welcome me as the second wife; my mother was the second wife of my father and I was held in great love and so it is difficult for me to understand her sentiment.  Perhaps she will never acknowledge the importance of my role in the Sultanate and if she can only tolerate me, so it is. I would rather not leave home at this time but I accept my duty and will stand strong with the Sultan and the rest of the family.
