MATÉN-LÓH IS THE  DAUGHTER OF PANG-LIMA. SHE GREW UP A LONELY CHILD IN THE ISLAND. SHE TRIES TO GAIN THE TRUST AND  FRIENDSHIP OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF PULÓ BUT BECAUSE OF HER FATHER, THE ISLANDERS AVOID HER. SHE FALLS IN LOVE WITH KISIG, THE SON OF HIS FATHER ENEMY

THIS IS HER STORY

I’ve been on this island for what feels like eternity. No friends, no one to confide in, no one to even talk to…not even about mundane everyday things… sure, I have my father who loves me dearly, and I him but lately he  only talks of  our old home.. before this island….. I vaguely remember times before the exile.. although, those are probably my father’s memories, not mine.. I was so little then.

As a child, I ran the island with all the others.  We spent hours playing along the shore, exploring the forest, climbing and jumping off trees into the emerald green pools of our favorite river, near where Kapre resided– he frightened and fascinated us to no end and still today, I am in awe of his power.  Our existence was carefree, and at times, only laughter and screams filled the space we inhabited, carried by the winds and resonating throughout the island, harmonizing with the water, wind, and animals.

My first love, my best friend is gone, I do not even know how it happened. As small children we were inseparable. In quiet moments one of our favorite things to do was to float on our backs, looking up to the sky. It would feel like I was flying as the gentle waves lulled me  to peace and oneness with the heavens… as I listened to the beating of my own heart, I would be lifted higher and higher.

I never imagined I would lose him.

The islanders blame my father and me for the problems of the island. Do they know that I too am suffering  in the circumstances my father has created with his rage-filled magic. My childhood friends avoid me.. I’ve even seen some run behind trees to hide.. just so we don’t cross paths… I’m invisible and ignored by them… It is a familiar feeling i’ve grown accustomed to.
